Alicia is walking in her 6th Avon Walk for Breast Cancer this year. She has been married to her high school sweetheart for 10 years and they have one daughter. Alicia is a long time friend of the Phillips family and grew up dancing with Malia and Heather at the YMCA. Sue was a 2nd mom to her growing up, spending lots of time throughout school years, dancing and anything else we were active in. She was definitely a woman that any young person looked up to because she loved everyone and boy was she protective of all her “kids.” Alicia’s husband had to be “approved” by Mama Sue before he could date her. She made sure that he was good to Alicia.
In 2002, we lost Mama Sue and life changed. She was not only a mom to her two daughters but a mom to so many. She taught me a lot about life and that we must live everyday! Life isn’t always fair! I walk in honor of her every year because she loved us so much and she was an inspiration to many. I not only walk in honor of Mama Sue but many others.
I began this walk journey in 2008 because I could no longer sit by and continue to watch friends, family and co-workers be overcome by this deadly cancer. I walk in honor of loved ones that I have lost and loved ones I still have here. Unfortunately my list grows every year of who I walk for because cancer has not been stopped and a cure has not been found. With the money I raise for the walk it will help continue the fight against breast cancer. It will help fund cancer patients who need assistance financially with medical bills and it will be used to fund research to find the cure for breast cancer.
I am involved with other walks around the area specifically City of Hope’s Walk for Hope. I am actively involved in my city and community.
Happy Walking,
Alicia Edquist
